Beyond the Birthdate: Why "Bucketing" is the Secret Weapon for Charity EDI Reporting?
For many UK-based non-profits, reporting on Protected Characteristics isn't just a "nice to have"—it’s the lifeblood of grant compliance. However, a common trap we see at Zon Projects is the "Field Explosion" problem: creating static fields for every conceivable age range required by different donors.
The Challenge One of our recent charity clients faced a reporting nightmare. One stakeholder required reporting for ages 0-16 and 17-24, while another demanded 0-18 and 19-30. Despite having the actual birthdate and age recorded, the team was manually exporting data to Excel just to "group" their beneficiaries.
The Zon Projects Solution Instead of building a complex web of formula fields that would break the moment a new donor arrived, we went back to Salesforce basics: Bucket Fields in Lightning Reports.
By using the "Actual Age" (a simple formula based on Birthdate), we empowered each department to:
Define their own ranges: Create custom "buckets" directly within a report.
Stay Agile: Change a range from 16 to 18 in seconds without a developer.
Clean Data: Remove redundant, static age-range checkboxes from the Contact record, keeping the UI lean and user-friendly.
The Result The team moved from manual data manipulation to real-time, self-service reporting. It’s a prime example of how the right platform knowledge can turn a technical headache into a streamlined, empowering process.
